Daytrip to Lake Nakuru National Park: Introduction

Lake Nakuru national park is a 177sqkm park located some 160km north west of Nairobi city. The park is located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and is home to one of the several soda lakes which goes by the same name. The park is fully fenced by electric wire to avoid human –wildlife and protect the rhino population in the park. Nakuru national park is located only 5 minutes from the Nakuru township and it’s a popular day trip destination for residents of Nakuru and Nairobi as well.

The Nakuru national park is home to more than 50 animal species and more than 400 species of birds. The park was started in 1966 as a sanctuary for birds and to protect the flamingos and other endemic birds. The park is a very successfully sanctuary for the white and black rhinos and they can be easily seen in the park just next to the game drive tracks. A game drive in Lake Nakuru national park is easy due to the fact that the park is relatively small and its fully fenced.
